Clair Wakefield

Clair-AW-editClair received a Masters of Applied Science degree in Mechanical Engineering (Acoustics) from U.B.C in 1973.  Since then he has gained over 38 years of experience in acoustics and noise control engineering, both as a private sector consultant and as government specialist.  From 1973 to 1980 Clair was a project engineer and later partner in the Vancouver acoustical consulting firm of Harford Kennedy Wakefield Ltd.  There he conducted a wide range of projects in community/environmental noise impact assessment and control, industrial /occupational noise control, architectural acoustics and building noise control.  In 1980, Clair joined the B.C. Ministry of Transportation and Highways as its first Sound Control Studies Engineer where he conducted noise impact assessments and developed noise impact assessment and mitigation policy and procedures.

In 1988, Clair formed Wakefield Acoustics Ltd. in Victoria, B.C. to provide a full range of consulting services in architectural acoustics and building noise and vibration control, industrial noise control and community noise impact assessment and control.  A particular focus of Clair’s work has been highway noise impact assessment, control and policy development.  He has drafted and revised the BC Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure’s highway noise policy and has conducted or directed noise assessments for most of the major highway projects on Vancouver Island and the lower mainland since 1988.

Outside of B.C., Clair directed the noise assessment and mitigation component of Crowchild Trail Design-Build project in Calgary.  Internationally, Clair has conducted community noise assessments for the Lamma Island Thermal Power Plant (Hong Kong Electric Company) and the Hong Kong Disneyland Theme Park (Hong Kong Civil Engineering Department and Disney Corporation).
