Working with Vic Davies Architects in 2003, Wakefield Acoustics Ltd. provided the acoustical design for the new Juan de Fuca (subsequently Bear Mountain) Arena in Langford, B.C., The arena was to be the new home to the Victoria Shamrocks Professional Lacrosse team as well as junior hockey. It was also to function as a multi-use facility that could host concerts and other non-sporting events. For this reason the building’s acoustics needed to be supportive of both high music quality and speech clarity. To achieve this objective, 10,000 square feet of sound absorptive ceiling baffles and wall panels were installed, with the wall panels being largely incorporated into “mountain motifs” on the arena’s end walls. Noise and vibration control design for the arena’s HVAC system was also provided.
